ENERGY RESOURCE ENGINEER

The Waste Management and Research Center (WMRC), a division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and an affiliate of the University of Illinois, is seeking a talented individual to provide technical assistance to Illinois Companies. WMRC is a focus of hazardous waste research, information services, and industrial technical assistance in Illinois state government.

Responsibilities
The Energy Resource Engineer, under the supervision of the Pollution Prevention Program Manager, will provide technical assistance to Illinois Companies in identifying opportunities and implementing solutions to promote energy efficient manufacturing. Responsibilities include: conducting on-site assessments; identifying energy minimization options, and managing energy reduction projects. In addition, the candidate will be developing and participating in the development and testing of alternate fuels, including biodiesel hydrogen, ethanol and others. The candidate should have demonstrable skills writing proposals and project reports, making presentations to clients and management, coordinating project activities, overseeing pilot projects conducted at industrial facilities, and assisting companies with developing/implementing energy management plans. Additional responsibilities include promoting WMRC services, and developing and implementing programs promoting energy efficiency in communities through activities such as education, demonstrations, and hands-on assistance.

Qualifications and Experience
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a Mechanical, Chemical or Electrical Engineering. Certification in energy management is desirable. At least 2 years of industrial experience in a similar position is preferred. The candidate must have knowledge of industrial processes (both with evaluating and troubleshooting) and process development techniques. The selected candidate must be familiar with engineering and pollution prevention concepts/techniques, environmental regulations and must have good mechanical and lab testing skills. Ability to maneuver in tight spaces within plant facilities and lift up to 50 lbs. is required. Effective personal relations, communication and problem solving skills are required, as well as the ability to work both independently and as a team member. Familiarity with performing applied technology evaluations, and implementing process improvements are also desired. Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software is required.

Benefits
A salary in the range of $52,000 to $56,000 is offered, consistent with qualifications. This position is a full-time U of I contract funded position with a full benefits package, including vacation and sick leave, comprehensive insurance, and SURS participation.
