Making Biodiesel

Biodiesel is produced through a chemical process called transesterification, involving the separation of glycerin from fatty acids and binding of those acids to alcohol molecules. Any vegetable oil, not just soybean oil, may be used, as well as animal fats. Oils from algae may also be used. A growing number of private citizens are producing their own biodiesel using commercially available kits. The Collaborative Biodiesel website provides a list of biofuels supplies and suppliers. The National Biodiesel Board provides a similar list.
