Reading List

Books:

The following books might be of interest to those wanting to learn more about environmental issues:

Anderson, Ray C.. Mid-Course Correction: Toward a Sustainable Enterprise: The Interface Model. Published by Chelsea Green Publishing; 1999.

AtKisson, Alan. Believing Cassandra: An Optimist Looks at a Pessimist's World. Published by Chelsea Green Publishing; 1999.

Benyus, Janine. Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature. Published by Morrow, William & Company; 1997.

Brown, Lester R.. Eco-Economy: Building an Economy for the Earth. Published by W. W. Norton, 2001. Mr. Brown is the president of Earth Policy Institute, a non-profit, interdisciplinary research organization based in Washington, DC. This book is similar to Natural Capitalism, in that it describes some of the ecological and economic inefficiencies of our current way of doing things. Eco-Economy describes a vision of how our economy must change in order to create a sustainable economy. This book can be downloaded from the EPI web site: www.earth-policy.org

Daly, Herman E. and Cobb, John B. Jr. For The Common Good: Redirecting the Economy toward Community, the Environment, and a Sustainable Future, second edition. Published by Beacon Press, Boston, 1994.

Hawken, Paul. The Ecology of Commerce: A Declaration of Sustainability, HarperBusiness, New York, 1993

Hawken, Paul; Lovins, Amory and Lovins, L. Hunter. Natural Capitalism: Creating The Next Industrial Revolution Published by Little, Brown and Company; 1999. Note: The complete text of this book can be read online at http://www.natcap.org/. An excellent book, describing the next industrial revolution. In the authors' view, we will be driving cars that are much more efficient, and will run on hydrogen, not petroleum. We will also see more recycling and more of a "service and flow" economy. The book quantifies much of the waste in our current economic systems and processes, and suggests a vision for needed changes.

Lomborg, Bjorn. The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2001. An interesting book, written by a former left-wing Greenpeace activist. In it, Mr. Lomborg challenges much of the pessimistic environmental outlook that most environmentalists espouse. In doing so, this university professor finds that even pessimistic beliefs that he once held are frequently unsupportable by the data that is available.

Nattrass, Brian; Naijrass, Brian; and Altomare, Mary. The Natural Step for Business: Wealth, Ecology and the Evolutionary Corporation Published by New Society Publishers, Limited; 1999.

De Villiers, Marq. Water: The Fate of Our Most Precious Resource, Houghton Mifflin, New York, 2000

von Weizsäcker, E. U., Lovins, A. B. and L. H. Factor Four: Doubling Wealth, Halving Resource Use, Earthscan, London, 1997. Available in North America exclusively from Rocky Mountain Institute, Snowmass, CO 81654-9199 (www.rmi.org)
